Since opening our medical aesthetics clinic in 2016, we have seen huge changes in this industry. Back then, there were fewer practitioners. Now, hundreds more enter the market every year.

 

Here is the worrying part: in the UK right now, you can attend a three-day course, with no prior medical knowledge, and immediately start injecting people’s faces. That is a frightening thought.

 

Even more concerning is where some of these treatments are happening. I once read about someone having their lips done in a public toilet. Most people would never consider that, but what about a spare room in someone’s house? Or the back of a hairdresser’s, a nail bar, or a beauty salon? At present, all of this is completely legal.

 

But legal does not mean safe.

 

The hidden risks of “cheap” treatments

 

If you are paying under £190 for treatment, shortcuts are likely being taken somewhere. Perhaps the product is not licensed. Perhaps it was purchased online from a supplier with no safety checks. Perhaps the injector’s training ended after a three-day course. Perhaps there is no insurance, no proper aftercare, and no emergency cover.

 

We are already seeing the consequences of this in the news:

 

• In the UK this summer, 41 people developed botulism after unsafe injections.

• In the US, patients were hospitalised after being injected with counterfeit products.

• In the UK, a young woman tragically died after a so-called “liquid BBL” filler treatment.

   

The common thread in all these cases is clear: unsafe practice, cheap products, and environments where price was chosen over patient safety.

 

I would not risk my own face to save a little money. I would rather wait, save up, and go somewhere I know is safe. Would you?

• A medical doctor who also holds a master’s degree in medical aesthetics, GMC registered.

• A consultant surgeon with 17 years of experience, MBChB, MRCOG, MMedSci (Hons), GMC

• A registered nurse who also holds a degree in cosmetology, NMC regulated.

• A medical aesthetics specialist who holds a master’s degree in medical cosmetology.

• A laser technician with a Level 4 qualification.

 

Every year, we continue training and refining our skills to ensure we meet the highest safety and clinical standards.

 

We practise medical aesthetics every day, not as a part-time job alongside something else, not as a hobby, and not because it happens to be the latest trend.

 

Our clinic has been serving the local community since 2016. We deliver safe treatments, carried out by qualified staff, using licensed products, in a purpose-built, hygienic and fully compliant clinic.

 

And no — we are not the cheapest.

 

Because safety and excellence cost money.
