Sun damage, Pigmentation, Melasma
There are 3 common causes of pigmentation:
-
Sun damage
-
Skin trauma
-
Hormones
Hyperpigmentation can be managed, but it is unlikely to be cured.
As soon as your skin is unprotected and is exposed to the sun, the pigmentation is likely to come back.
However, it is not likely to be as pronounced as it was originally.
Especially, if you follow the advice and use recommended medical grade skincare prescribed to you by your clinician.
There are multiple approaches to treating hyperpigmentation.
Chemical Peels
There are different strengths of peels that are used to reduce hyperpigmentation. Shedding peels, such as half Jessner and full Jessner have multiple benefits.
Hyperpigmentation reduction
Acne scarring reduction
Pore refinement
Reduction in superficial lines
Course of treatments is required.
The strongest peel, full Jessner, is suitable for white and light Asian skin only.
Dark Asian and Black skin requires a different approach. We have a specific section on how to treat Black and Asian skin.
Microneedling
Microneedling involves piercing the skin with tiny sterile needles using a roller or a pen, to create microscopic wounds. This triggers your skin’s wound-healing response, and after this, new, healthy skin can form that matches your normal skin tone. This reduces the appearance of dark spots.
It is also used to treat
Acne scarring
Vascular skin
Lines and wrinkles
Dilated pores
Suitable for all skin types.
Course of treatments is required.
IPL
It stands for Intense Pulsed Light
IPL helps treat hyperpigmention by selectively heating up the pigment (but leaving the surrounding tissue alone and unharmed), then lifting that heated, “damaged” area to the surface of the skin where it is removed by the body’s natural exfoliation process.
The pigmentation spots that have been effectively treated, typically, will get darker initially over the next 24 hours, then slowly fade away over the next 1-2 weeks.
Course of treatments is required.
IPL has multiple benefits and is also used for these conditions
Acne
Rosacea
Vascular skin
Suitable for white and light Asian skin only. Dark Asian and Black skin requires a different approach.
